Our Magnet Magazine Mix Tape

Magnet

Magnet Magazine was kind enough to ask us to create a mix tape for them. We had a good time rounding up all the influences that went into Songs for the New -- from The Band to Nina Simone to XTC to Richard & Linda Thompson to Bill Withers to Judee Sill and beyond.

Jude calls the piece a "decoder ring" to the new album, which is probably not too far off the mark.

Buy "Songs for the New"

"Songs for the New" is the album we've been dreaming of making for quite some time. Written & conceptualized in the Catskills, it's our little mountain magnum opus.  Don't want to speak too much more to its content, but -- recorded over the course of year at Don & Jason's studios, mixed by the incomparable Joel Hamilton at Studio G, and mastered by Adam Ayan at Gateway -- we will say that it sounds very very nice.  For more on the making of the album, this is a good place to start: interview with Rumpus.

The album is available in CD, Digital, and dual LP formats. Each features an uncoated stock sleeve and lyric booklet designed by Ian O’Phelan. They look rad and feel good to hold.

Thanks to Chris Charmichael for the beautiful strings & Jonathan Powell for the horn arrangements. Thanks to Josh Roy Brown & Tom Siler for their cameos. And a special shout-out to James Anthony, head honcho at Riot Bear.

The Rumpus Inteview With Steve Koester

Janet Steen talks to Steve Koester about the making of Two Dark Birds'  "Songs for the New" in a wide-ranging and extensive interview. Other topics covered: trees, NYC social paranoia, Karen Dalton, and the "Catskills Sound".

In short, a great intro to the new album. Read it here.

"Song for Clementine" Video

Song for Clementine is the first single from our new album "Songs for the New" due out 10.4.11 on the Riot Bear Recording Co.

This beautiful ode to the Catskills was shot this summer in the woods just outside of Andes, NY by Video Director Erica Hill and Margee Challa, and stars Coco Hill. We are immensely grateful to all three of them.

The "Clementine" single is avaible for purchase from Riot Bear or iTunes.

Truck America Festival 2011

UPDATE 08.15.11: Truck America has been cancelled for 2011. Bummer.

We are quite stoked to once again be a part of the Truck America Festival, September 9 - 11 in Big Indian, NY.  The festival is held at Full Moon Resort (just a stone's throw from our Pakatakan Mountain hideaway) in the Catskills and features some astounding talent this year -- The Hold Steady, Wye Oak, Ra Ra Riot, Okkervil River, Oxygen Ponies, Dreaming Spires, The Felice Brothers and a ton more.

We'll be playing on Saturday, Sept 10 at 7:45 pm in The Barn (where we belong). This will be the Catstkills CD release show for our new album "Songs for the New."   Please join us!

The festival is run by Joe and Robin Bennett, two bros from England who have been running the English version of Truck just outside of Oxford for nearly a decade.  I initially met them when their then band Goldrush toured Europe with my then band Maplewood. Joe ended up playing several shows with Two Dark Birds and doing the strings arrangements for our first album. They are champs.

If you live in the city, come camp and make a weekend of it. If you live in the Skills, come camp and make a weekend of it. It's going to be great fun.

Dallas Orbiter Does "23"

Dallas Orbiter, a very fine psych-rock band from the Twin Cities, just released a cover of the song "23" as the b-side to their June single "(We Got) Supercars."

To celebrate their tenth year as a band, Dallas Orbiter has been releasing a single per month all year. A-sides are originals and b-sides are covers.  We are honored to be in the  company of Brian Eno, Comsat Angels, Al Stewart, BOC and Boz Scaggs.  Especially, Boz Scaggs.
Do
"23" is a song that Steve wrote awhile back and Two Dark Birds performs live often and will one day record (we swear it).

Mark from DO gives his take on "23".
We thought this song was a great summertime rooftop jam, or as its author Steve Koester put it, "a jumping off the rooftop jam." Steve co-fronted the incredible Mke/Mpls/NYC hard wave outfit Punchdrunk then released two glorious solo records as simply Koester. He currently leads the upstate New York-based "heavy mellow" Two Dark Birds. We're honored to present our version of "23," a song originally recorded for Koester's never-released third solo album Finders, Keepers, and which has only ever been released as part of a limited-edition collection of acoustic demos called (Here Come The) Gloomtown Rockers (200mg Records). Two Dark Birds second lp entitled Songs for the New is due out in September.

Benefit for Woodland Playhouse

Tumblr_lngzs9mmpj1qjonomo1_128

We'll be playing a benefit in Phoenicia on Friday July 15 at the Shandaken Theater. We'll be playing two sets. Doors are at 7pm, first set should start around 7:30pm.

Woodland Playhouse is a great, community minded pre-school in the Phoenicia area. The benefit will raise money for it's specialty classes - arts,

music, and science.

Listen to WIOX on Wednesday afternoon and WKZE on Thursday afternoon to hear more about the benefit (and some new Two Dark Birds songs).

The show is all ages.  Should be a fantastic night.
